80th Goodwood Members' Meeting
After a very wet and very muddy setup day, the 80th Goodwood Members' Meeting was treated to early spring conditions with sunshine and just a brief drizzle. The lovely weather allowed for two days of great racing with a wide variety machinery out on the Goodwood Motor Circuit. These ranged from early Edwardian behemoths to 1960s sports cars and Group 1 touring cars. In addition to the races there were several high-speed demonstrations, featuring 2000s GT1 racers, Porsche 911-based competition cars and one with a pair of Brabham BT52s. Many of the cars in both the races and the demonstrations were driven by world class drivers including the likes of Tom Kristensen, Dario Franchitti and Andy Priaulx.

Demonstrations
A staple of the Goodwood Members' Meetings are the high-speed demonstrations. One of these was for the GT1 racing cars from the 2000s. Raced on both sides of the Atlantic and in all major sports car championships, this generation of GT1 cars has a special place in the heart of many. Out on track at Goodwood was a nice selection of these cars that included the successful Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranellos, Aston Martin DBR9s, Vipers and Corvettes but also the wild Marcos LM600. The run on Saturday at dusk harked back at all the 24-hour races these cars competed at.
Porsche's 75th anniversary was celebrated by bringing out 911-based competition cars from the early 1970s Targa Florio Carrera RSR to the 1998 Le Mans winning 911 GT1 Evo '98.
The only ever lap recorded at Goodwood at under one-minute, reportedly completed by Nelson Piquet in 1983 with a Brabham BT52 during a test, was marked by a demonstration with two BT52s with David Brabham and Riccardo Patrese behind the wheel.

Gurney Trophy
Due to the very busy schedule, most groups were limited to one 15-minute practice and a 20-minute race. Among the exceptions was the Gurney Trophy for 1960s sports cars, which was run over 45 minutes and for two drivers. The colourful field included a fleet of Ford GT40s but also a Lotus 30 and several 23s, Elvas and several Chevron B8s. Fastest of all in qualifying was three-time Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti in the GT40 he shared with owner Shaun Lynn. Close behind was the GT40 of Gordon Shedden and Miles Griffiths. The final front-row position was for Richard Bradley and Katsu Kubota in the sole Lotus 30. It turned out to be an eventful race where Franchitti and Lynn looked set to take an easy win until a 10-second penalty meant that Franchitti needed to keep the pedal down through to the end. The Shedden and Griffiths GT40 lost time when spinning at high speed while trying to pass a back-marker, and had to settle for third. A surprise second was the small Chevron B8 of Andrew Kirkaldy and Stuart Hall. They had started on the third row and despite also receiving a penalty, managed to work their way up the order finishing less than ten seconds behind the winning GT40.

S.F. Edge Trophy
Also a set fixture during the Goodwood Members' Meetings is the S.F. Edge Trophy for early Edwardian machines. The race is so popular that it was part of the live broadcast on Sunday together with the Jim Clark Trophy. After a single qualifying session, the cars were sent out for two five-lap races. Perhaps the most famous of these behemoths, Duncan Pittaway's Fiat S.76 was among the entrants. He finished the first race in tenth and then crossed the line on Sunday in seventh with the 'Beast of Turin'. At the sharp end of the field, the fight for victory was between Julian Mazjub in his 1916 Sunbeam Indy racer and Mark Walker in the 1905 Darracq 200. The latter consisted of little more than a frame, a couple of axles, a massive V8 engine, a seat and a steering wheel. Not necessarily designed to go around corners, it once held the World Land Speed Record. Wearing motorcycle leathers, Walker nevertheless managed to keep tabs on Mazjub in both races and then powered past on the start-finish straight on the final lap to claim two wins.

Further highlights
Now known as the Gordon Spice Trophy, the touring car race is another key ingredient of the Members' Meeting. Oversubscribed, the entry list was split in two and from each heat the top 15 cars made it to the final on Sunday. A touring car race in optima forma, the final had two red flags and was eventually won by former world champion Rob Huff in a Camaro.
Celebrating 60 years of the Ford Lotus Cortina, the two-driver Jim Clark Trophy featured a 30-car strong field of these machines. Broadcast live on television, the 45-minute race was won by Andrew Jordan and David Dickenson after an exciting race.
The Sunday afternoon races were particularly exciting with the Salvadori Cup for 1950s sports cars going to the wire. Eventually, it was Martin Stretton, who had started from pole position, who won in his Lister Knobbly. The race was followed by the Moss Trophy for early 1960s GT cars. Beating a large number of Jaguar E-Types, it was won by James Cottingham in an early Shelby Cobra 260.

Final thoughts
From the start, the Members' Meeting was a great addition to the line-up of Goodwood events. With the focus on racing and without the strict 1948-1966 cut-off years, it provides a truly different experience compared to the Revival Meeting in September. A great start to the historic racing season, the most intimate of Goodwood events provided a great spectacle in 2023.
