All those Toyota sedans looked pretty similar but don't think the Cressida was ever badged as a Camry. Camry was always FWD I think.

you might have point there about FWD. The last Cressida sold over here (with the distinctive 2 separate headlights was RWD), had no idea that they continued the RWD set-up. Here it was replaced with the first wedge shaped Camry, and the the second version of the Camry looks remarkably similar to your car.
You are right in the sense that most Toyota Sedans of the period are styled similarly Henk, but the Camry of that vintage is a much smaller car than the Cressida in most dimensions - save for width.
sucks that it was dodgy, but at least you had it checked out and saved yourself a bunch of trouble (take note, whiteballz) :p
