Says the guy who bought a Volvo!
It was the second car I looked properly at. so I have one up on you in terms of decision making skills.
Secondly, I didn't make a huge thread about it.
Two scores for me. Thus, in Conclusion,

and the lolvo is provably capable of harsh long range endurance trips whilst under...heavy load
-
Hells yeah, The lolvo is a touge monster. Clutch smashed a R33 GTST down a mountian pass.
-
LOL i think he thought there were speed cameras
-
I'm thinking it's plausible he thought we were designed in 8 bit :D
WTF Aerodynamic H4X
-
yeah that's why i wasn't suprised when that guy made a lego volvo. i mean seriously of all the cars, that'd be the easiest.

4 bricks of duplo would do it.
Just so I understand .. your Toyota-phobe Mum is ok with Citroens but not a Merc?
What kind of used-car logic am I missing out on here?
Don't get me wrong Spaz, I'm not having a go at you. Just a tad
Mate fwiw I just went for a wade through your Trademe site and saw quite a few tempters of all descriptions (various makes & models) within your price range. By that I mean the kind of stuff that I'd consider owning myself, if in your shoes...
Btw I appreciate the importance of a WOF. Is rego very expensive in NZ? And could you tell me what an RUC is? :)
A merc wouldn't be so bad, as long as its not a great big massive one. 190e or similar would be alright, but they're mostly auto which isn't really for me. Citroen was a little questionable but it appeared to be in pretty good nick (turns out it needs new tyres and a couple of other things), and my uncle is a bit of a buff on them.
There are heaps of great cars on trade me but I'm a bit limited to whats local and since I'm in a fairly small area of NZ there isn't alot of choice. If you've found anything particularly interesting though don't hesitate to show me cause it might be worth travelling for!
rego is 20 bucks a month or so. Road user charges (RUC) are for diesel vehicles because theres no tax on diesel fuel at the pump. very outdated system.

Driving a manual is pretty hard I suppose. :)

A mercedes isn't a mercedes without a nice smooth shifting auto tranny ;). They're made for cruising and enjoying life. One arm out the window, one arm around the girlfriend (or a can of Heineken), and a knee or two on the bottom of the steering wheel. There's simply no time or room for shifting in there. Let the big softy merc do it for you :).

sounds like driving the sigma! :)
-
I'd take a 318i over the sigma any day ;)
-
I was going to mention the old BMW option.. they can be found with manuals, but if you do go looking, aim for a 323i.
Says an (ex)Volvo driver.. it's a manual though.
