ok, something else now.
howie day got to be pretter popular here recently, but if you have never seen him live, it is rather impressive. uses loopers and effects and all kinda of crazy stuff. so if you can sit through this huge vid, it gets really awesome at the end.

Fun to watch that steel guitar/slide guitar (whatever it is).

Best Guitar Player: Drakkie.
I personally am a big David Gilmour fan. Not that he is very skilled technically, but because his solos are so melodic and gorgeous. In terms of the best guitarist ever, there are claims to be made for Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, etc. I really like Steven Hackett as well - there are others I am forgetting. I don't have one favourite though. In terms of the most skilled guitarist, those guys form the old era are nowhere near as fast as the new guys with new techniques and more practice at being speedy.
For pure speed and madness, the Dragonforce Japanese guitarist, Michael Angelo Batio - and this guy, Chris Impelliteri. He is fast as hell:

Here's Herman Li of Dragon Force:

The fast guys are curiosities to me. My main love is still Prog Rock (and to a lesser extent, Classic Rock).
Yeah... that was totally amazing and beautiful. I should listen to more acousitc guys that are really pro as the sound is so rich. Maybe I will find that a really sick and melodic acoustic dude is my favoutire. Anyways, on that hast fand mover, I had to post Batio. Watch this. This is truly remarkable. I can almost guarantee you won't regret it. And wait till the 1:50 mark.

That is nearly unbelievable. In fact, I am still not sure it is possible. But it seems that this is done in metal and he is the best at it.
Frank Gembale is pretty amazing too.

Sorry for all the links. But these things blow my mind.
David Gilmour for me - 'nuff said (my avatar gives it away )...like Kitdy said, by no means is he the fastest, or best technically - his solos are just magic. The live version of "Comfortably Numb" from PULSE (circa 1994 i think) is magnificent - check it out on Youtube if you've got a spare few minutes.
I'm also a big fan of Tommy Emmanuel..that guy rocks

I am a New Zealander, and I hate Greg Murphy. Yes, we exist.
No offense but all the shredder guys make me not want to even play guitar anymore... I guess they can do what they do if they're enjoying it, but its not even music to me. Just my $0.02.
Gilmour, on the other hand, is amazing.
If acoustic counts, then I nominate Conor Oberst
I was just listening to PULSE - a very solid album no doubt. I think it is one of the best showcases of Gilmour's mastery. Shine On, Astronomy Domine, Coming Back to Life, A Great Day for Freedom, and Sorrow.
David is the man. I unfortunately missed him playing here in TO as the tickets sold out too quick; I hope that he tours at least once more in his life (I would wager yes). I DID have the egood fortune of getting Roger Waters tickets and the show was absolutely amazing!
