Completed in November of 1935, this 4CM was sold new to Luigi Castelbarco according to the Orsini & Zagari Maserati book. It is believed that he did not actually take delivery and it was raced instead by the works team during the 1936 season by a variety of drivers. Goffredo Zehender debuted the car at Monaco with a fourth-place starting position. He retired after 43 laps with piston problems. The following month, Omobono Tenni finished second in the Eifelrennen and in its final works appearance, Gino Revere finished fifth in the Coppa Ciano. It was then sold to Scuderia Impero and then continued to be raced by successive owners in Italian events into the 1940 season. After the War, it was campaigned by Gaetano dell’Acqua in 1947 and 1948.
Following the car’s contemporary racing career, it was sold to the United States. Among the subsequent owners were Joel Finn, Bob Sutherland and Rudy Pas. During the 1980s, it was acquired by John Sebert, who restored the 4CM. It changed hands several times before it was sold to Simon Edwards in 2007. He had it comprehensively restored once more and race prepared by Sean Danaher. The 4CM was raced from the mid-2010s by Edwards before he sold it on to the current custodian in 2020.
